Can firmware be updated through an "Outside this LAN" connection?
I need to update a program on a Click plc. The old firmware is 3.43 and I'm using 3.80 software to update the program. When I try to update the firmware, it tells me I need to connect with an inside Lan, Serial or USB connection.
I'm over 2 hours away from this facility so I'd like to be able to do this without the need for travel. Is there anything I can do to be able to get this task complete?
One way we have accomplished upgrades (both PLC firmware and project) was to send a upgraded/programmed CPU module. This was easy with the D2 bases in that the CPU module (both the Do-more and the DL) could be removed without a lot of disassembly. The Click requires more disassembly. Possibly there is someone on site that has the skills to replace the Click CPU, with you walking them through the replacement process.
If your changes do not require the newer firmware, you can install Click Software version 3.43 and use it to perform the work remotely. I wouldn't recommend updating firmware remotely even if if the software allowed it.
I haven't had a problem with Click firmware updates aside from the fact that it might alter the IP configuration address and require you to edit the network connection properties of the router or PC to which it's connected at least temporarily to finish the setup changes.
I have kept old versions installed on my machine for reasons like this, in case I just want to make a small edit to an older system without the concerns of losing retentive data or causing any downtime.
You will probably have to contact A/D to request that version if you want to install 3.43. They have only versions 3.71 and up on the download site right now.
There are forum threads about compatibility, but my windows 10 OS still runs all the old versions just fine. ymmv.
