Stridelinx VPN is slow
I have done a direct comparison of Stridelinx and a competitor. Same local network, same
plc controller, same plc software, identical equipment. Makes remoting into the PLC almost
un-usable. An software upload with Stridelinx takes 35mins. Competitor 8mins.
I have tried al the suggestions in the help section with no improvement. Are there any plans to improve the VPN speed of the stridelinx VPN?
The StrideLinx router’s VPN connection has a throughput speed of 8-10 Mbit/s. This speed is determined by the StrideLinx router’s hardware specifications and the type and level of cryptography (encryption and decryption of data packets). The recommended internet speed needs to be around 1.5 times higher, to cover the overhead of the VPN tunnel. The exact overhead is dependent on the exact circumstances, such as the size of the data packets you are sending through the VPN tunnel. If you are not getting this it could be network variations such as VPN Server location being used. This would likely be a difference between the 2 routers.
You can compare the specifications of the other device you are using to the StrideLinx and you may see that is where the difference is.
The throughput available as newer hardware becomes available may increase.
Also if we may ask, what device are you comparing it to?
EWON HMS
That's a very broad product line. Can you be more specific?
Flexy
I cannot find any documentation of throughput speed on the EWON Flexy router in their documentation. However, you are comparing a $1200 + product to a $500 (if using a wired model) to $800(if using the cellular model) product.
We are exploring a more advanced router offering, however as with the Flexy vs. the Cosy with EWON there would be a higher cost.
Thanks for your input!
I am working with a remote site using the Automation Direct p/n: SE-SL3011-WF VPN router and am finding screen updates very slow in Productivity Suite 4.5.1.6 when I turn on Monitoring. When I access the HMI using the remote app, the connection with the Automation Direct CM5-T22W is problematic, as it keeps dropping the connection, requiring me to re-login multiple times, as well as having slow update times. Pinging the PLC (P3-550E CPU) in the remote panel results in the following:
$ ping 192.168.1.2
Pinging 192.168.1.2 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 192.168.1.2: bytes=32 time=1305ms TTL=63
Reply from 192.168.1.2: bytes=32 time=1472ms TTL=63
Reply from 192.168.1.2: bytes=32 time=757ms TTL=63
Reply from 192.168.1.2: bytes=32 time=970ms TTL=63
Ping statistics for 192.168.1.2:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 757ms, Maximum = 1472ms, Average = 1126ms
Note that the ping utility was run when neither the Productivity Suite s/w, nor the remote HMI connection was connected to the remote site.
FWIW, I am working from my office in Canada and have a fast fiber-optic connection to the Internet. The customer site I am connecting to via the StrideLinx VPN is in S. Korea. Is this slow update time typical for a StrideLinx VPN connection to a PLC? If not, can you suggest what can be done to speed it up?
Update: It's late Sunday afternoon here in Canada and early Monday morning in S. Korea and pings are returning much more quickly now. See below:

That's considerably faster (shorter pin times) than the previous time I did this. This could be due to less network traffic and congestion between where I am here in Canada and the customer site in S. Korea. I will keep track of network performance throughout this week to see how much it varies.
Good morning,
As you monitor the network conditions, then you should be aware of an issue recently discovered in Productivity Suite v4.5.1.6.
When monitoring a task or project which contains UDI instructions the GUI (Data View) may become unresponsive or slow and sluggish as well as incorrectly trigger a "Maximum capacity has been reached" error.
A partial fix has been implemented in the upcoming release to improve the performance related to this problem.
Thank you for updating your findings!
Thank you for letting me know that some of the issues I am seeing with the Productivity Software is specific to v4.5.16 and that a partial fix is on the way. My work-around has been to create a new, temporary task that contains minimal rungs ending with a NOP with the rungs showing the status of tags I am interested in. When I turn on monitoring for this task, the tags update fairly quickly.
I have a follow-up question regarding the CM5 remote app that I downloaded by accessing the HMI panel with a browser. It's a very handy app, but I keep having to login repeatedly due to dropped connections. Is there a way of reducing the tendency for dropped connections?
There are some C-more Help Topics on setting up the Remote App which may help.
On the Remote App under the Setup Button, there is an option for adjusting the Timeout setting, and if you're experiencing delays through VPN then this may be beneficial to increase that value. (Link to this topic: CM510 "Communicating with C-more using the Remote Access Feature")
Client Setting
Client(PC) settings do not affect C-More panel performance and so do not impact local operations.
Other Help topics like CM509 "What is Remote Access?" mention some performance related considerations also:
Remote Access Performance
The update rate of the panel can be affected by many things. Your connection speed may vary for any of the following reasons if they apply to either your local PC connection or the remote C-more connection:
If you are experiencing slow update rates with the panel project, then it is suggested that you test your connection by loading a simple project in the C-more panel that contains only one screen and one object. You can then add more screens and /or objects. Animated objects can decrease the response time as well. There are also many free software tools that can be downloaded from the internet to test your connection speed and your ISP routing paths.
Remote support can be challenging, and I am glad that the work around you've devised for Productivity Suite is suitable in this case!
