Sliding Mode Control (SMC) over PID?

I see on PLCTalk.net threads of posters discussing the benefits of Sliding Mode Control (SMC) over PID for On/Off temperature control due to it being easier to tune AND more stable than PID.

Has anyone tried it, been satisfied AND have any example code?

There are DEAD links for papers, Excel spreadsheet and example DirectLogic and SLC code on PLCTalk.net. 😑

I'd like to try it because I am convinced the auto tune in Productivity is either broken OR the PID is just not suited for On/Off temperature control. What do I mean? I tune a zone to heat to and maintain 325F and even after tuning it still over shoots 25F. I want +/- 2-4F. Is that too much to ask?

I bet if you reply to the SMC thread where Peter Nachtwey posted the (now broken) links to the Delta Motion site where those programs were, he will respond and attach the files (if he still has access to them).

Even though he is retired, he still gets on the PLCTalk forum regularly. I might even have a copy of the SLC version on my home PC.
