Productivity 1000 connection issues

I am trying to get my first ever P1-540 set up and while I can do so over usb, I need to be able to do from further away than a usb 2.0 cable will allow. the only option seems to be over an ethernet cable but I can't get them to connect and I don't know enough about IP addresses to know what I am doing wrong. Even without the usb connected its able to start and stop blinking the run light but when i click connect it throws a "cannot find the cpu" error. I've tried a few different addresses based on the AAC automation video and and text guide matching the first three numbers to my laptop's IP address with the fourth a few numbers higher but no luck. I know very little about networking so I don't even know where to look to figure out what I am doing wrong

Take a look at the on-line Help Topic P058 for Choose CPU to learn more about how to set the IP Address on your PLC.

If you're able to Start/Stop the blinking then your physical connection should be good, so you will just need to use the "Change CPU IP/Name" button to set the CPU's new IP address into the appropriate range.

If you're unsure what that IP Address may need to be, then a good place to start would be to ascertain your PC's IP address to make sure you use the same range: e.g. your router is set to 192.168.1.1, and your PC may be set to 192.168.1.10, so then you'd want to set your CPU to 192.168.1.11 with a Subnet Mask of 255.255.255.0 and use the router address as the Default Gateway of 192.168.1.1

I talked to ADC tech support and we tried a few things before they determined it was defective and recommend I RMA it. I'm skeptical it's not something I am doing wrong but we'll find out tomorrow when the new one gets here I guess.

Are you attempting to connect to the P1K through a direct connection from an Ethernet port on your computer or through a USB to Ethernet adapter? I sometimes have an issue with the driver for the adapter not playing well or Windows refusing to take the IP address I wish the port on the computer to be: 10.10.10.100; 255.255.255.0

Direct from my laptop to the P1k. Should I try through a router?

Yes, if you don't know much about IP addresses and how to configure the devices manually and understand what subnet you are configuring to and how to go back, then you should be connecting the P1k to a router and your laptop to the same router. That will make the configuration far simpler as it should be auto discovered in the CPU selection of the software. From there you can change the IP address of the P1k manually or set it into DHCP mode like your laptop likely is.

Laptop on wifi from the router and the P1k wired to the router is perfectly fine.

Got the new one in, same problem, called support again and got a different tech who had me change to a static IP address. everything worked after that. annoying I lost a day waiting for a new CPU and now have to ship one out but whatever.
