Help on selecting correct I/O modules for PLC/Servo system

Hi guys, I'm working on a machine design. It's got 5 driven rolls, each with its own 750W SS2 motor and drive. This will be connected through a PLC for control and touch screen for operation. The rolls will need to be run at different speeds. So we'll pick a master roll and se that speed in RPM then base the other 4 rolls speeds as a ratio to the master roll. I know I'm not going to be able to hook all 5 drives to a standard 18-pin BRX.

My question is this - would using a 36-pin BRX work or would I be better with an 18 and use a couple BX-HSIO4 modules to connect the drives with? I'm also going to need an Analog module as three of the rolls are heated and require 4-20mA signals for heater control at 3 zones per roll as well as thermocouple inputs.

I'm trying to figure out everything I'll need to get this setup and working properly. Thanks!

Use comms to control the drives, less mess in the cabinet and need less i/os.

So how do I go about that? What do I need for hardware? Thanks in advance.

Depends on your drives,if they do for example modbus rtu,u might need nothing (example sureservo 2) as its built into both - plc and the drives, if ethernet, then u will need ethernet modules extra in case of sureservo2.

The drives we've selected are the SV2A-2075 units. So I can use the ethernet ports on them for comms? I'll have to dig into that, thanks!

Would I use the Modbus instead of the 50-pin connector with the step/direction inputs?

      • Slad (Customer)

No ethernet, only serial, for ethernet need to purchase ethernet modules.

Yes u can use modbus for speed and position.

So I watched a few videos so far. Would Modbus TCP or Ethernet IP be better?

Ethernet is faster,do u realy need it to be super fast?,if not and wanna save money, use serial.

      • EpicWill (Customer)

It doesn't need to be fast, the rolls are just going to rotate at a constant speed in a fixed direction so no motion control system or anything. So I assume I'd use the Modbus TCP then?

As ive mentioned above,if doesnt need to be fast,u could use modbus rtu - no aditional hardware needed,if wanna use modbus tcp - u need to purchase ethernet modules for each drive.

Also,if no motion control is needed,u can get away with regular drive in vector mode - way cheaper than servos.
