Quickly remove blank wires from the ladder diagram

I have a simple ladder diagram, however, as I keep making changes, the diagram becomes wider and wider, eventually went outside the screen. a lot of the rungs are very simple with blank wires between two nodes. see example below.

I'd like to remove some of those extra wires, beside creating a new rung and copying the nodes to the new rung which is shorter and then delete the original rung. what's the best way to remove those wires?

If I understand what you are wanting to do, the best way is to right click on the wire you want to remove and select Delete -> Column. This will shorten the rung. An alternative is to right click on the column number at the top of the ladder editor and select Delete Column for All Rungs - keep in mind that if you have any contacts in the column, they will be deleted, so do this with caution.

If you typically write "simple" programs with just a few contacts in rungs you can also set your default columns for a project to 5-6. This will make all rungs shorter, and you can still add a column to a specific rung when you need one that is extra wide with many more contacts in it.

    Thanks all for the tips!

Set default columns to less than 8, this will make it fit most laptops. I find it rare to need more than 4.

Another trap to watch out for is compare contacts. Line them all up in the same column.

Also, set your ladder options to wrap the tag name text. This will shrink a substantial amount of whitespace.

I'm on software version 3.70 - there is no option to delete columns when I right click on either a wire or a column. I don't even see anywhere to set the "default" setting for number of columns.

The DELETE COLUMN is a flyout of the Right Click context menu [Delete -> Column]

The actions are highlighted in the attached image - for 3.7.0.10PAC Column controls

Yours looks nothing like mine... but you say you are on 3.7, not 3.70, so...

Is there a way to get the old 3.7 version?

OP is using Productivity Suite, you're using Click.

Similar workflow to add/sub wires though.
