400hz Motors

I 've noticed that many late model VFDs have support for 400 hz. motors. I 've seen 400 hz 3 phase motors - but they have been 28 volt (designed for aircraft use). But amazed by how small and light they are for their power. Does anyone make 230 / 460 volt 400 hz motors, say 1/2 hp or higher (1 hp+). Oh I understand how an inverter drive can be made to operate at any speed, but I have never seen a motor that can handle it.

Normally 400 hz motors are used for high speed spindles, and yes they are 460 volt. DO NOT try to run them without a drive you will make the magic go away. We have sold them in the 300 to 600 hp range, but we repair the smaller (5hp) motors for a window manufacturer in the area. They have ceramic bearings and special grease for the high speeds. The ones we repair are made in Europe not sure of the manufacturer but do a google for high spindle motors.

I know this is an old post, but I wanted to add that many washing machines use variable speed 3-phase motors designed to run on 240V @ up to 380 Hz. The ones Ive seen will drive a 6-groove belt and run quite well from a GS2-10P5 at the 400Hz setting. These motors are adaptable to a variety of new duties...
