on last year's project we set up a stepper motor to drive a chain. We 're now noticing that the motor doesn't have quite as much torque as we would like, so we decided to upgrade the drive and power supply to get the most out of it. The motor is STP-MTRH-34127, and the existing drive is STP-DRV-6575, with the maximum compatible power supply STP-PWR-4810. So in order to upgrade the power supply to STP-PWR-7005, we also had to upgrade the drive to STP-DRV-80100. Upon opening the box for the STP-DRV-80100, I noticed there are no dip switches. After some research I downloaded the STP-PRO software and started to try it out, but what I found were some parameters which I had to fill out (some of which I don't even know what they are, like load inertia, and smoothing filter). This is where I'm looking for help. Basically I want the maximum torque out of this thing. My current step/rev is 200, so I'd like to keep that as it is. Also, can I use my EA-MG-PGM-CBL for communication? I don't have a 9-pin serial port to use with the cable that came with it (and my usb adapter is AWOL) Thanks!

you can click on the help tab in the SureStep s/w, then click contents to get the answers you need
basically, the load inertia is the resistance you overcome in either moving or stopping the load
the smooting filter allows the drive to be used with low steps/rev settings (like yours, since it's 200 steps/rev)
the 80100 comes with the correct cable for programming, but you will need the USB~serial adapter

As far as the EA-MG-PGM-CBL, if your were to make up a suitable cable (the step drive does not have the same pin out as a C-more/CLICK), then I suppose you could, it is a USB to RS232 adapter after all. However, I'd recommend getting another USB to 9pin RS232 and using the cable that came with the drive.
Just curious, at what sort of speed are you running the motor? The increase in torque with higher voltage is most noticeable at higher speeds, at low speeds the increase may not be so much. On the other hand, at low speeds the anti-resonance feather of the "advanced " stepper dive might be very useful (possibly even more than the higher voltage).
The SureStep manual doesn't seem to say much about what the drive does with the inertia setting. I imagine it is most relevant when using the internal indexer, in which case the information may be used to modify the acceleration profile. If you are controlling it with a pulse train I wonder how applicable it is? Still, it couldn't hurt to get it right since you seem to be wanting the absolute maximum performance from the motor.
Appendix C of the SureStep manual has a pretty decent description of matching a motor to a mechanism.

I 've found my usb adapter, so never mind about the about the cable. Specifically, I'm concerned about this message that pops up about load inertia. I have no idea what value would be appropriate, or if I should even set it.

that message is usually displayed b/c you 've modified the dampening and/or anti-resonance without setting the load inertia

I 've change no such settings. I 've specified the motor, pressed ok. Then I clicked "Motion & I/O "> Pulse and direction mode, changed "Steps/Rev " to 200, clicked OK. That's I 've done immediately after install. I haven't even seen settings for dampening or anti-resonance

look on the motor configuration screen to see if the ED/A-R is checked. If not, then I'm not sure...

The box is unchecked (by default). I notice that by default 1x rotor inertia is specified, but if you change that value, and then put it back to 1 (default) the message goes away.

I accidentally flashed the STP-DRV-80100 driver with the wrong firmware instead of 107P or 107N. The driver was successfully flashed, but it has since stopped connecting via COM1 and won’t let me flash the correct firmware. Is there a solution for reflashing it?
Sadly once the wrong firmware is in the drive there is no way to recover it. The stepper drive will have to be replaced. The latest 1.07P firmware is at this link is needed later on.
