HO-CTRIO with stepper position question

I have a HO-CTRIO set up on a 06 controlling a Surestep drive with a Cmore attached. All is working fine. I want to add position input to the system but am having a hard time deciding which way to go. I have a encoder mounted to the stepper motor shaft and thinking of using this as my counter input on the CTRIO, as I am not using any of the input fuctions yet. I want to display position and set software limits for forward and reverse direction. Will a quad counter count both directions? Add and subtract? In the past I have always done this with a pot on a analog input, but the pot always is the weak link in the system. Figured I would try a encoder for position this time.

never mind, I just got it going. My brain is fried today and this was the easiest part of the project. Time to quit and go home. I configured the inputs as a quad counter and scaled accordingly. Gives me exactly what I need.
