1-ph to 3-ph VFD

A location for a remote lift station pump has only 1-phase available. The motor amps (24.8 amps) is larger than the ADC 1-phase-input VFDs ratings. But an application note from another supplier says I can use a 3-phase-input VFD on 1-phase with de-rating. I don't feel I can use this anyway because it is not in the specs. Has anyone seen this? Is this true? If this is true, why is this not included in the specs? Has anyone tried this?

    This is a good rule of thumb and will work on VFD's that either do not have a phase loss detection circuit or have a parameter that will turn off the phase loss detection. Hitachi drives have this parameter. GS drives do not have a parameter to turn off phase loss detection and thus cannot be used at the higher hp's. And before any one suggests "faking it " please be advised that the GS drives phase loss cannot be " faked out " at the higher HP units.

    We routinely use the GS3 with 1-phase 230V to drive 230V 3-phase motors.

    Select a drive that is double the amps of whatever motor you want to drive. It should work fine.

    I use the hatchi drive the thing to remember to double the drive and and go in l1 and l3. If you dont want to use a drive you can use a static converter. just a thought. But I like the drive way.

    I did not know this "secret " capability of the drives, never heard of it used.

    You learn something new every day.

    However, for now on this project, simply to avoid awkward questions, I went with a VFD with a published rating of 1-phase-input.

    Generally to drive 1-phase motor, we should use 1-phase VFDs. For example, we only offer 1-phase VFD to drive 1-phase motor, 3-phase VFD to drive 3-phase motor.

    But it depends. If the supplier say so, I think it may be possible. The supplier may offer such a solution.

    jjsjeff, did you have to do something to bypass the phase detection or did you only use 3HP and smaller? Tech support told me these drives have phase detection and that supplying single phase would not work over 3HP.

    We are feeding single phase in to a GS3-2030 drive on a 15HP motor. Works fine with no parameter changes inspite of what tech says.
