Has anyone used the SureServo for an Indexing application yet? I need to index a ball screw X distance for Y times. I thought about using steppers, but I need more torque for this ap.

I 've done several with steppers and the SureServo's. Most of the times I use a stepper, because it's more cost effective. I use another manufactures stepper so I can get the higher torque I need. It's fairly easy either way. Just depends if your going to use an HMI to enter different indexing variables or if it's just a constant in the program. And also if your going to use encoder feedback. My background is in the printing industry as well. Let me know in more detail what your plan is and I'll pass along anything I know.

This is a step away from printing. I help the local Association for the Blind in my area and they run a lot of tape products. They were donated an old tape slicer, and want me to get it running for them. Original setup is with a motor and clutch. It just about isnt worth the effort, but I help them out for the cause. I have a sure servo setup I keep around as spare and figured I would try an index routine with it. My plan is to use a HMI for the variables. I have used servo systems only for electronic gearing up to now. This machine will index, then slice, and so on, till the end of the product, about 60 ". I think it should be fairly simple. It has a carriage with a chop saw on it.

There's several ways you could go about this. The first thing that pops into my mind is to set up your a CTRIO (or other pulse output) to output your pulses to the SureServo with the Servo set up to accept external pulses (P1-00, P1-01 I believe). If it's not critical I wouldn't worry about a feedback to the PLC (from an encoder). I'd just have the HMI set up so you can change your Vmemory location in the PLC for a new target pulse count. That's all I 've done in the past. But that's just my two cents.

Shoupdaddy, that sounds like the way to go. Internally the servo will only accept 8 positions, and I need more than that. I will have to trial and error whether feedback will be needed. If torque is ok, it should work fine. I am going to set this up and give it a try. I will post results.

We got it working, pretty well, if I say so myself. We used the internal index function and set the amount of index through the HMI. A lot easier than I thought it would be.
