Stepper Clutch

Two questions: 1. When power is removed completely from a STP-MTR-23055 (for example) stepper motor does the holding torque go to essentially zero? I am contemplating an autopilot application that would require a disconnect when dis-engaged, unless simply removing the power would do it. 2. Can I vary the maximum dynamic and static torque to allow the unit to "slip " when the applied force reaches a yet-to-be-determined level? TIA

    1. The only torque left would be the detent torque from the motor poles/magnets (not much).

    2. Without checking the drive, most of the better ones have POTS for setting holding and running torque. You could set them low and the motor could be overpowered if needed.
