Sure Servo Brake No Brake

Can someone fill me in on the need for a brake? I thought that if I sent a command to go to position X, that once it got there it would stop and stay there (appropriate decel and all). Is the brake for high speed applications where the windings don't have enough time to responde or is it something else. Thanks

This type of brake is a "holding brake ". It is spring-set and released with application of power. In other words, it is acting as a holding brake when power is off. The brake is not intended to stop the servo motor. A holding brake is commonly used in a application where there is a gravity force that might cause the load to move or fall when power is off.
