Servo Control

I know the folks at AD are always working on something new, but I was wondering if there are any plans for adding real servo control to their line. I know you can control a servo system like a stepper, but I want a full blown servo system. Right now the only time I use a non-AD PLC is because of servo control. And the PLCs we use are very expensive. Not to mention the extra cost for software and other components of the system. I know this would be a great undertaking, but I for one would be very interested in seeing it happen. Modbus tcp/ip would be great, too. I think I read somewhere that that is in the works. Is that true? Would anybody else be interested in servo control?

    Hi,

Im using the AllMotion system that is in the Automation Direct catalog and find that it works great. The people at AllMotion are very helpful, and the system is very affordable.

I use a H2-CTRIO module with with the PB Hybrid Servo System.

AllMotion has a lot of info you can down load at their web site www.motiononline.com.

Check it out and see if its what your looking for.

    Sorry

I ment Automation Intelligence Inc. NOT AllMotion. But come to think of it AllMotion might work for you. The AllMotion board is programed with their software (which is free at www.allmotion.com)then I use the a PD command to activate the program in the AllMotion board from the PLC. The AllMotion board just needs a 5v signal change to start the pre-programed cycle.

Modbus TCP is currently in the works. It will be available in the newer 100 MBit Ethernet versions of the ECOM, ERMs and EBCs.

We are adding a few other new features. For example, we actually have the new ECOMs sending email in prototype tests via ladder logic! Hopefully, they will be in production later this year, but there is still lots of work left to get them to "production ".

Thanks for the info, guys. The system from Automation Intelligence is nice, but not what I am looking for. I would like to have a closed loop servo process, which I can't get now from an AD PLC. Does anyone know how feasible this is?

I use www.smartmotor.com Servos. They program and are self contained.

They accept both digital and ASCII commands.

The ASCII commands are great because I can "print " the commands out of the PLC's Comm port to change position, velocity, Accel/Decel and tell it to go. you can even use the digital I/O at the same time.

    They are very flexable.

    j,

Tell us what PLC you used before with servo control. Then we can make a good comparison. http://forum1.automationdirect.com/board/wink.gif

In the past I used Entivity VLC with motion engineering servo controllers with AD I/O. Now the Entivity ThinknDo is supposed to have similar motion functions, but I haven't tried it.

I looked at the motiononline site and the SMS-10 or 15 looks like it would do what you want. The only thing I'm not sure on is how you would Communicate between the SMS and the AD PLC, but I didn't read into it that far.

    lav,

Looks like you have a nice setup. http://forum1.automationdirect.com/board/cool.gif

Right now we use Giddings&Lewis for servo control. I like the PLCs, but because of the cost, we only use them for an application that requires servo control. I will look into the smartmotor servos. They might do the trick. Thanks for the info.

    james,

I 've got a couple of old G&L PLCs with servos(1994). I never did like the software. http://forum1.automationdirect.com/board/tongue.gif

However, the hardware/software platform of having the servo card right in the rack is very nice and easy to use. http://forum1.automationdirect.com/board/cool.gif

A would gladly welcome a higher end servo card in an AD PLC. http://forum1.automationdirect.com/board/biggrin.gif

    Franji1,

What do you say, have you guys thought about making a servo card?
