I have a machine with a dl05 with +24vdc common. input card is d2-16nd3-2 The machine feeds a fairly thin uninsulated steel wire. Sometimes, the steel wire buckles if there's a kink, or an obstruction. I was wondering if I can connect an input wire (x0) directly to an insulated metal plate, so if this wire touches this plate, the signal will ground through the wire and stop the machine. I 've seen these types of sensors before, but ive never actually did the wiring, and I'm just a little scared of shorting something out. I'm thinking that i need a resistor for a load, but i think there may be on inside the input card any help is appreciated. thanks

Yes.. that should work.. No resistor required.. the bent wire becomes your switch..
I did something like this in a Well.. I used the 24VDC 'Out ' of the X input and took it off to a wire hanging in a Well Casing.. It was a cheep/fast level detector.. when the water was on the wire, it grounded the lead ( Sinking Input ) and turned on the well and let it run.. when the water level dropped below the wire.. it turned off the well for about 1 hr to let the water recover..
It was better than letting the pump run dry..
