DL06 with SMC Fieldbus (I/O)

I am new to this Forum and need your insight. I have been using a DL06 PLC to run a processing machine that uses a SMC pneumatic manifold hard wired to the PLC. With the solenoids and sensors I am maxed out with inputs and outputs. I would really like to go to a Fieldbus system where the I/Os are at the Fieldbus manifold and the connection to the PLC is a data cable. Has anyone used a DL06 with a SMC Fieldbus and if so what protocol worked. Thanks

If they offered Modbus it would be easy, but of course not.

That does suggest a solution though, Bernie. @frankpm1, you could add a second PLC used simply as dumb Modbus I/O or there are Modbus RTU and TCP I/O products from Advantech and others, but for that much cost and space, you might as well switch to a Do-More and get a ton of other advantages for the same money. If you have 100 I/O on an 06 (the max-out point), you should probably upgrade anyway. Or switch to different valves; there are lots of better valves than SMCs.

The SMC Fieldbus we would like to use integrates the pneumatic solenoids so there are no wires interfacing to an I/O, it is part of the Manifold. That is what makes the SMC Field bus manifold so appealing. I can use an AD Terminal I/O but all that does is shift the solenoid wire termination point (does not reduce the wiring) in our application.

I may be able to use the SMC EX250 series manifold with Modbus TCP, I am using the port 2 as a modbus RTU for remote temp controllers now.

I'm glad you will be able to do that. I couldn't find Modbus (RTU or TCP) listed in the SMC protocols in my Googling.

    Bernie,

I came across it in their fieldbus flyer. Special order!

It may be time to look at migrating over to Do-more

Thought I would post an update on this thread.

I interfaced a SMC EX600-SEN1-X15 (Modbus TCP)field bus manifold system and EX600-DXPD (input blocks) with a DL06 PLC using an HO-ECOM100.

Used the IBOX ECOM100, ECRX and ECWX to set it up.

The combination is working good on the bench!

Kudos to SMC for making a version that uses a common protocols. Proprietary protocols are a pain.
