Hello all I have an application where I am designing a SCADA control for a large duplex septic system. I know the DL06 has an operating temperature of 32 to 131 degrees and a storage temperature of -4 to 158 degrees. Does anyone know what happens if a PLC is exposed to an operating temperature lower than its rating does it “come back to life” when the temperature goes back up to within operating range. What happens if the power goes out and it is less than -4 degrees is the PLC toast. Seems that with the added expense of installing thermal management devises it would be better to pay more for a PLC that has wider operating temperatures (if there was one) might I suggest a new product option? Does anyone have any experiences good or bad with placing PLC’s (in enclosure’s) outdoors?

It's the electrolytic caps that don't like the cold. On the other end of the temperature range, the electronics need to be able to dissipate the heat of operation, and they will exceed their internal temperature ranges if the ambient temp goes too high.
I seem to remember reading that Schneider has an extended temp range line:

I did some work for an OEM about 8 years ago, we used 205/260's and 06's. They said they would install panel heaters because most of this equipment was being installed in ND & MN. The first unit was about 15 miles from Canada, PLC panel is outside, very cold during the winter. Last year I was called to service this unit, nothing related to the PLC. It was -22 f with a wind chill to -45 f, the panel has no heater, never had one. The PLC was running fine, it may have a shorter life but it had not stopped because of the cold for 8 years. I did some checking and none of the units have heaters. We built 84 of these units and all but 9 are in very cold areas. We have not had a PLC failure in 8 years. I still think it would be better if there was at least an option to purchase a
DLO6 with a wider temperature range.

same here i haved used dl05 and 06 at -20F without problem in outdoor enclosures, ambiant may be very cold but inside the plc is always hotter.
cant you put a small heater near the plc if in very low temps?

For those interested I have found a PLC that has an operating temperature range of -40-85C. It is Tengcon Corp T-950.
