Two questions: 1) When the computer & ECOM are both plugged into the LAN side of a router (tried a couple of different routers) I cannot gain access to the ECOM to initially setup the IP (but it works with a switch). Would this be due to a limitation of the router, or what is missing here? I would expect the LAN side of a router to work just like a switch (but with a DHCP server & other capabilities.) 2) Instead of using a switch or router, if I had a crossover cable could I connect directly to the ECOM to set it up? Once I 've put the IP in the ECOM and then set up the router correctly, everything is fine. What I'm trying to get away from is needing a switch temporarily just for initial ECOM setup.

The crossover should definately do it.

In short, I 've tried different types of routers and tried a crossover cable and had very little success in being able to set up the ECOM with anything other than a simple GS105 switch (with or without being on a DHCP network).
I don't understand why the crossover cable won't work for initial setup or comm after setup. If the ECOM has it's IP already set, it will respond to a ping over the xover cable (and is fully functional with a router), but will not establish comm with DS5 with a xover cable.
Could it be a setting on my comp? Our IT person tried a couple of adjustments but we lost patience there pretty fast (because it's non-critical as long as I always have a switch in my back pocket).

I use a crossover cable to setup ecom-100s and it works everytime. Do you have IPX setup on your PC?

I'm no expert at this, only done a couple systems, but I have a thought.
Because I was dealing with 3 different brands of equipment, each came with it's own factory initial address. I found I had to change the laptop address and subnet(I think that's the term) so they were both in the same neighborhood, then I could connect, change address, and disconnect. Get all equipment and laptop with similar addresses, and then things worked right.
Just a thought,

The reason this doesn't work is because NetEdit uses a broadcast to find the ECOMs on the network. All routers, by default, block broadcasts of any kind.

Crossover should work, unless you have more than one NIC (Network Interface Card) enabled (e.g. a wired, and a wireless). Try disabling the wireless NIC and see if it works.

Yes, two active network connection cards can often cause a problem. The software usually picks the wrong one.
