Field IO w/DL05

Just making sure but I can use MODBUS with the DL05 to communicate with FieldIO? Still in the learning stages Thanks for your help

If you 're looking at the DL05 or DL06 for your Modbus master, you should go with the DL06. The 06 includes Modbus instructions, MRX, MWX. These instructions provide features that the 05 does not provide. The 06 also provides RS232 and RS485. The 05 only provides RS232.

Im trying to keep the price down as low as possible. would it be a pain to use the 05 with the MODBUS?

The 'pain ' in using the 05 and the lack of MWX/MRX instructions is that you have to laboriously set up the 4 step communication parameter boxes. But once you have one command working the others will be a lot of copy/pasting.
Secondly the MODBUS target in the external device has to be stated in terms of the equivalent target in an AD PLC USING THE AD ADDRESS NOMENCLATURE. Fortunately AD has provided an Excel spreadsheet to help in the conversion. Once you have it set up and troubleshot though it should work fine.
As noted, if you are talking to more than one device you will have to use an RS232 -> RS485 convertor. Again AD has these.

Ok, Not that i didn't believe you i just was wondering why, I will stick with the 06. That and my needs for the field IO has dissipated. Thank you for helping me. I know dealing with newbies can be a pain!

Have you looked into the CLICK PLC line? I think it could do the MODBUS commands you want for the price of the DL05.

Szarman makes a point. Once the external power supply is factored in, the CLICK price break is about the same, only with a lot more expansion abilities.:D

my problem is the comms work well if i have the 05 talking rs232 to the 06 and the pc but i loose comms with but when i unplug the PC i loose field i/o (y's)

milo11, I am sorry, but I do not understand your problems. Please describe your configuration again, listing the master PLC and the slave PLC, the ports and cables/pin-connections you are using. And further describe the PLC, port, cable, and why the PC is connected (programming, monitoring, forcing-bits?). Please further describe your exact problems and when they occur.

You have a grounding problem. The PC is supplying the ground reference for the RS-232 signal. When you unplug it the ground reference goes away and comms are lost.
Be sure to ground both PLC's to the same reference point. Or get a FA-ISOCON for the DL05 and use RS-485. If you are going more than 20 feet, I suggest getting an FA-ISOCON for the DL05 anyway. RS-232 is problematic in industrial environments with longer distances than 20 feet.
