This is frustrating me to no end! Using DirectSoft32 V4.0 (build 18) - I was making changes in the documentation editor, and the program stopped responding. I was forced to quit. When I re-opened the project, the documentation was corrupted. I lost several dozen memory descriptions and nicknames and wiring info. Used a backup to recover lost documentation. Re-entered most of the ones lost from today's edits. Crashed again!!!!! Lost Even more documention! What is going on with this, and why would documentation that has been in the program all the sudden just get totally deleted? Now I have to re-enter stuff AGAIN! What do I have to do, make a backup after every new documentation entry???

Is there a known bug, or something I should be looking for to fix this?

I'm using DS5 and i 've had the documentation file corrupt about 5 times in the last 6 sessions. Luckily I'm backing up quite often and I 've been able to restore it by exporting the element documentation from my backup and importing into my working file.
The one time it crashed today seemed to correspond with me tripping over the programming cable and yanking out my USB adapter. DS5 then hung up on me and I had to shut it down with task manager. When I reopened it (with document editor errors), I had lost nicknames that I had created the day before.
slight nuissance.

DCLittlejohn,
It sounds like your documentation database became corrupted a few copies back. There have been problems fixed over the years regarding the database. Build 18 is from December 2002, and I know we 've fixed a number of bugs dealing with the database corruption problem. Version 4 most recent maintenance build is build 25.
You get free maintenance upgrades for your version. They are available here
http://www.hosteng.com/SW-Products/DirectSOFT/DirectSOFT5.htm
The top part of the page deals with Rel 5, just page down to the Rel 4 maintenance download area and that will (hopefully) fix the problem from occuring again.
Note that if a database is already corrupt, even the "fixed " version cannot uncorrupt it, so it may pop its ugly head on existing projects.
There is a solution for this. If you export the element documentation (File->Export->Element Documentation), then import it back (File->Import->Element Documentation) with "Import Method " as "Delete existing ", then that will regenerate the database from scratch.
Note that this may not restore all of your element documentation. Portions of the database that are corrupted may not be accessible, even using Export.
So I would recommend
1. installing Rel 4 Maintenance Build 25
2. Exporting then importing using "delete existing " on your existing project(s).

I forgot to mention that when you do a backup, it also does an export of the element documentation. So if you check the backup folder (c:\directsoft4\projects\backup) for the specific project, look for a .TXT file.
Those files may contain "lost " documentation data. I think Rel 4 maintains 4 "backups ", so you may get lucky and find some missing element documentation that way.

I had a similar problem where the documentation would randomly move to different rungs.
I have not experienced this since upgrading to Rel 5.
