450 ERM/EBC

Has anyone ran into a problem with the ERM Workbench not allowing you to configure an EBC saying that the PLC in is run mode. Everything else in the world says it is not in run and Automation Direct Tech Support is stumped. Right now we are so PO'd that we are considering scrapping the whole ERM concept

Did you mean "configure an ERM " or do you really mean "configure the EBC ".

When you connect to an ERM with a PLC in Run mode, ERM Workbench warns you that the PLC is in RUN mode and you must manually update the ERM status page by hitting the Read ERM Status button.

Basically, when you are in RUN mode, you are doing real I/O, so ERM Workbench will not hit the I/O network with polling data - you must do it manually (using the Read ERM Status button). This includes polling the PLC to see when the CPU is NOT in Run mode. So after you switch the PLC to Program Mode, ERM Workbench does not know that, you must manually poll the ERM again.

Your correct, the button says write to ERM.

The PLC is NOT in run mode. The workbench says it is in run mode and forcing an update does not change it.

Everything we have checked says the PLC is not in run mode but the workbench shows a big yellow run status and the read status button does not change anything but the last time it was refreshed.

It sounds like you are not connected to the ERM you think you are connected to??? Do you have more than one ERM on the same network or are connected to the right network?

The best way to tell is hit the Read ERM button (or File->Read From ERM menu). This will bring up the Read ERM Configuration dialog where you select the protocol (IPX vs. UDP/IP). Select your protocol then hit OK.

The next dialog that appears will be one of two dialogs, either a simple one that shows one ERM that it found (Ethernet Remote Master Found!), or a complex one that shows a list of multiple ERMs that it found (Select Ethernet Remote Master).

If it is the simple one (ERM Found!), there is a button on the dialog to Flash the Error Light on the ERM module itself. Hit that button and see if the specific ERM flashes its error light and that PLC's CPU's Run light is OFF. The error light flashes 6 times for 3 seconds.

If it is the complex one (Select ERM), then just click on the specific ERM in the list and that will cause the error light to flash on the ERM module itself. The error light flashes 6 times for 3 seconds. Again, make sure the error light flashes and that PLC's CPU Run light is OFF.

Error light flashed and then clicked next. The next message was that the PLC is in run mode but it is NOT.

    Hmmmm

    1. Go to the I/O Config in DirectSOFT of the PLC and make sure that it reports the ERM model number in the proper slot in the I/O Config table. If not, maybe you have a bent pin, bad seating, bad module, et. al.

    2. What is the CPU and what slot is the ERM in? (205 - it cannot be in slot 0).

    3. What CPU type does ERM Workbench report? That's on the main screen but it is also on the Detailed ERM Status dialog. The button to get there is below the Read ERM Status button on the main page. Once you are in the Detailed ERM Statistics dialog check toe "Force Automatic Read ERM Status in RUN mode " button on the left side and see if you get any error messages. Is the CPU reported correctly or is it "??? "?

    4. Does the ERM currently have a configuration or is it empty?

    5. Check firmware of the ERM along with the PLC's firmware. Make sure they 're both up to date.

    6. Lastly, just power cycle the PLC with the PLC in program mode and the ERM should come up with the proper PLC mode.

    Mac Address/IP Address/Description in NETEDIT3 Show ERM and the DS5 shows a D4-DCM

    2. What is the CPU and what slot is the ERM in? (205 - it cannot be in slot 0).

It is a DC powered 450 CPU with 3.10 Firmware and 3.10 Gatearray. The ERM is in slot 7 of local expansion base 1

The reported CPU type is 450 CPU. The CPU interface is PLC The only error listed is Missing Configuration.

    4. Does the ERM currently have a configuration or is it empty?

Empty, this is what is the problem.

    5. Check firmware of the ERM along with the PLC's firmware. Make sure they 're both up to date.

Netedit3 reports the ERM is up to date. See above for the PLC

    6. Lastly, just power cycle the PLC with the PLC in program mode and the ERM should come up with the proper PLC mode.

Did that, it did not work.

This sounds like a bent or retracted pin on either the ERM or the CPU.

Sometimes retracted pins are difficult to spot. I typically inspect both the module(s) and the base. Usually if the pin is retracted you will find a spot on the backplane connector that is mashed into the hole where the pin would line up.

    I'd do the following:

    1) Inspect all modules including the CPU for bent or retracted pins.

    2) Inspect the base backplane connectors.

    3) Try a different slot for the ERM. If you have a different base, I'd try that as well.

Did all that. Have ordered new module overnighted to me, if that doesn't fix it we can't spend any more time or money on this we will go back to using PLC CPU's and forget remote IO.

I 've talked around and there are some cases where an intelligent module becomes flaky in 405 expansion bases. Try placing the ERM in the local base (base 0) if you can to see if that fixes the problem.

Did that on day one at the request of the ADC tech support. Still showed the PLC in run mode in the workbench software even though the plc was in program mode.
