Is there a programming cable option for laptops that no longer have a 9 pin D-shell RS232 connector but have many USB ports?

You need a USB to RS232 adapter. My favorite is the ATEN USB-RS232 adapter, but there are many others out there that work with varying rates of success.

After you install the USB converter it should map in as a standard com port. If it does not map in as COM1 or COM2 (use device manager to see where it maps in at) look at HOST Engineerings FAQs for DirectSoft. Look at FAQ13 in particular. Note the FAQ refers to DS400.ini fro DirectSoft 4, if you are using DirectSoft 5, change the reference to DS400.ini to DS500.ini

With DS5, the same link is just identified as "PLC via KEYSPAN ". I don't know what actual COM number is being used. Since it worked, I haven't bothered to find out. You know, if it's not broken ...

I use a tripp-lite model U209-000-R on an HP laptop. I had to disable the onboard modem in the laptop & force The USB adapter to COM2 to get it to work. Once I did that it works fine.
