I have a D4-RS connected to a D4-RM (440) that has been working fine for a number of years. This system is at a remote location and the customer called to say that the Diag. led is on, on the RS. I know this means that there is a hardware failure, but is there any way that I can determine what it is via modem (presently I have not connected to the unit yet). A bit more information: they say that the RS works fine for a little while (1-2 minutes) then "locks " up. The RS has one D4-04AD, and three D4-16TR. Also, the D4-RM leds show no errors. Thanks.

Possibly. Take a look at page 4-8 of the DL405 Remote I/O manual. There are some relays that you can look at to help you diagnose the problem, but they may not help much.
It could be noise, a cut communications line, poor voltage supplying one or more of the bases, or bad hardware.

Thanks for the input...I 've been able to get on line and the Master unit (Base 0, Slot 1) indicates that a fuse is blown (in the D4-16TR). I talked to Tech. Support and he said that this would not be the reason for the Remote unit locking up. He suggested that I place a CPU into the location where the RS is and have them check the indicator lights on the IO's. My question, which I should of asked, is can I take the D4-440 and CPU that presently resides on the Master and replace the RS on the Remote without 1: changing the program and 2: could this damage the program or the D4-405 and CPU? Thanks

It won't hurt anything as far as the plc is concerned, but it might actuate some outputs that you don't want to come on causing machine damage. If you want to try this I recommend putting an END at the beginning of the program before moving the cpu. That way there can't be any mistakes.
