A/D Stepper System

For those of you considering using the A/D stepper system, it works great. The simplicity in setup and programming was excellent in comparison to “others� systems I have used in the past. I used four of the largest torque motors and had dead on performance. We did however require more torque for another application and found a company, AMCI, on the web that offers Nema 34 motors up to 887 oz. in. of torque. They are fully compatible with the A/D power supply and driver providing you wire for series current. AMCI offers a driver but is very pricey in comparison to A/D. To insure “no slip� positioning we used a linear position device to “check� the position of the driven component in comparison to step motor position. We connected the linear to the DL06 analog input and did a comparison in LL to confirm actual mechanical position to pulse count stepper position. Works absolutely fantastic and will not permit the machine to “crash� due to a slip condition. Hopefully the tech’s at A/D push for larger torque motors in the future. For most our applications the “434� from A/D falls short of torque. Are you listening A/D? Great job A/D, I’m impressed.

    Thank you for the very positive feedback on our new SureStep stepping systems. We tried to keep these products as easy-to-use as possible. The dipswitch set-up and connectorization were benefits that we didn't see in the competition's standard products.

    Your position verification using linear analog sensor seems very interesting. In fact, we are looking for an application to feature in our new DirectLogic/SureStep webinar. Would you have interest in providing some basic information about your application along with a picture? If yes, we will contact you directly with more details.

    Concerning the larger systems, this is something that we are very interested in doing at a later time. Two ideas we have are:

    1) Adding NEMA gearhead options for our steppers that would increase torque with a decrease in speed.

    2) Adding a driver that can operate directly from a 120 VAC input so that we could have more torque and more speed. This will most likely be a new family of drive, motors, and cable for the higher voltage operation.

    We could add a longer stack NEMA 34 for use with our present step driver as you did but we felt the max speed would be too low in general given our voltage and current limitations with the existing driver.
