I design an application and I must used a redundant PLC. Can I used DL-405 to this application?

I understood that you could. Ask AD directly and they should point you to a PDF that shows you how to hook up two 405 PLCs.

A point of clarification might be in order. The plc would not be a "true " redundent plc, but more of a "hot " backup system ready to take over when the need arises. Also there will be some delay in this changeover process.
For some applications this is fine, but if fast control is needed it is not the best solution.

I designed about five redundant PLC systems with 405 CPU. It worked fine for more than 7 years. With up to 400 I/O. Also I made a generic one with 205 with the two PLC communicate with each other through D I/O (actually they send numbers and massages through 3 D I/O only.
Both PLC communicates and updates each other. Routine checks and integrity checks is done. Outputs are active for both system. So it is basically 1:1 redundant system Application is for Bag filter cleaning sequence, a sequential process. A normal redundant system would not work with such efficiency.
There a lot of issues concerning the redundancy and how the system will react in different scenarios, if one PLC failed then fixed and bring in line, general power failure/restored, input module failure, Operator interface communication, primary/secondary ladder program, etc.
You need to think about the possible failure/operation scenarios and prepare the solution for each one.
What my client gained is: "Very competitive system compared to AB or others, and receive a system that well suit the application"
You can configure the system to be hot back up / or active backup, or what ever you want because you the one who will design it.
The system updates depend basically on your data exchange volume and the program of your application.
This is a tailored system so client shall know what he will gets and what is the good and bad thing about such system.
Some application specially ESD system and that evolves safety issues for machine/personal shall be treated with high caution.
Good luck

Does anyone have this PDF showing how to hook up two 405 PLCs? I actually just asked AD directly and they were not aware of this file. Anybody have a system description for the redundant setup?

Redundant Setup
Kristjan H, have you already get the redundant setup PDF file? I'm facing the same problem with using D2-260CPU. Anyone got the setup? Please help!!!

I have totally no idea abou redundant system, could anynoe advise me, what modules need to add up if my client using D2-260 CPU and 6 slot base D2-06B-1 with all slot used up. Should I just use D2-CM and D2-EM to do it? Besides, hardware side, could anyone got sample problem for me to do redundant system when 1 CPU failled, another CPU comes up to run the system? Please help!!!

It is not possible for a hot change over. Techsupport says that they have never and cannot do it. There is a reason why AD PLCs are so cost effective. I looked at GE and their redundant CPUs are almost three to four times the price of their regular CPU. I think this explains it. I am still running some tests with the P3000, and will post up a solution when I find one.

Why not use 2 exact PLC setups with identical programming and have them both running into double diode terminal blocks(2 in 1 out)so they will have the same ins and outs....diodes will be pointing in the correct position....Just an idea...not diagnostic of each other though.
