Has anyone really verified the accuracy of the DL05 clock module D0-01MC? Does it loose or gain any seconds/month? I have one but have never really checked the accuracy of it. I want to use it to chime the church bells at noon every day.

I would greatly caution anyone from using a PLC clock, as a reference for GMT, to plot your longitudinal position while sailing anywhere near, or around a reef. However maybe the townsfolk wont notice that the bells toll +, or " a few minutes a month off of high noon.

That brings up an idea I was considering... putting a cheap gps receiver just to get time from the satellites. It may be cheaper yet to find an atomic clock that gets it's time from WWVB in Colorado. I'm sure no one else will notice a few seconds/minutes, but I will and I live a block away.

    Time...

My desktop has analogX (atomic time server). It pings twice a day. On most of our PLCs we have a modem connection. Every once in a while I update the time on the "time critical " jobs via the modem from my desktop PC. I 've noticed that most PLC clocks are off by 20 seconds or so a month.

Question: Are you going to use the DL05 to toll time? or do carols? Either way I would think that your going to be in for quite a programming project. How many bells? I'm starting to salivate..

Much simpler..... I will play bells from an MP3 player, hymns etc....

You can buy a wireless and cordless GPS clock, which gets its time from the Global Positioning Satellite system (synchronized with the Military's atomic clock).

There are industrial GPS clocks with outputs and alarms.

    Check them out at http://primexwireless.com/

Bummer, I thought you were talking about real bells. Our church has about 10 real bells that play from a scroll, like a player panio. I had envisioned that you were talking about someting like that.

anyway if your using an MP3 player, what will the PLC do? How will it start the bells?

The MP3 just responds to serial data... 01 plays sound 1, 02 plays sound 2 etc... www.tetraphon.com sells them. I put the bells on compact flash. The plc will track time and decide what to play. I wanted the controller to be in a format that any local technician would be able to service.

I dont know of any inexpensive way to get "atomic time " into your plc on a automatic basis. I checked the link above and am not sure how this will interface with the plc without a PC.

I have kinda a Rube Goldburg-ish idea thou..

Buy a cheap atomic-radio clock (about $50.00) and use a prox sensor on a PLC input to pick up the sweep second hand, then correct the PLC clock seconds to "30 " when the second hand passes the prox switch mounted at 6.

We had a similar project that required the PLC to stay very accurate (sun tracking).

    Check out www.brgprecision.com.

    A clock display: BRG418 $139

An Outdoor rated GPS Receiver: GO $595

    A "contact closure " option: WS $25

Gives you a system that will send a pulse (contact closure) to the PLC at (for example) 12:00 midnight, every day. With ladder logic you can then set the Time when the pulse is received.
