I am looking into putting several D2-250s on a network and looking at being able to program monitor with a PC. What is the best route? And can I share data over the same communication network?

Probably the easiest thing to do would be to put ECOM Modules in each rack and connect them all using a hub. Give each ECOM MOdule its own IP address and away you go. I use DSData to communicate with the various PLCs. You can also communicate directly using DirectSoft.

ECOMs allow peer-to-peer communication (anyone can talk to anyone) which is good if you want a PC to communicate with the PLCs AND have the PLCs share data.

Serial ports must be configured as master only or slave only, so it's a little difficult to configure a peer network using serial ports. It's doable, but more of a hassle.
