Directsoft allows you to place so many instructions in series on one rung that it takes the rung off screen and forces you to cursor left and right to see the full rung. This makes troubleshooting difficult and hard copy printing pretty nasty. Does anyone else think that Directsoft should limit the number of instructions to the width of the screen? That's what internal coils are for, right?

Absolutely not!... If I don't want a long horizontal rung, I'll break it up myself. What I would like is for DirectSOFT to automatically wrap the line so it's visible at the current xoom level (Like RS Logix). Maybe that's what you meant?

No, wrapping gets nasty with a lot of branches. I mean limit the number of series contacts that are on a rung so that it doesn't exceed the width. If you hit the limit and you still have more permissives, drop an internal bit right there and place it on the next rung. In other words, break apart your permissives in a more organized fashion. Much cleaner and easier to troubleshoot, I think.

I don't want that limit arbitrarily imposed on me. I agree goo programming practice usually dictates breaking complex rungs up with "flag " bits, but I want the flexibility to make that my choice.

You can certainly self-impose a limit in your own programming style to avoid the problem. However, compares take more room than contactcts, so it gets pretty tough to anticipate hitting the display limit - especially with multiple zoom factors available!

fyi, we would NEVER limit the customer to a maximum width (actually DirectSoft does - it's 255 columns & 255 rows). If the customer wants to limit it himself, he can use "internal coils ". That's his prerogative.

However, it WOULD be slick to offer a "display mode " (i.e. NOT edit mode) that looked JUST LIKE LADDER PRINTOUT - doing wrap around with A/A labels, B/B labels, etc. I think that WOULD be neat, especially if you had a long rung and wanted to do STATUS. It would require more VERTICAL space doing the wrapping, but if we made it an option, you could enable the feature when you wanted.

I realize zooming out alleviates some of the STATUS issues of fitting an entire HUGE rung on the screen. But what do you all think???

Arbitrarily limiting my screen width? I develop at 1600x1200 and run 1024x768 on my notebook when in the field. I run the high res at the office to get the extra width in DirectSoft & AutoCAD. If a rung needs to be broken up I'll break it up myself, I don't need anyone else telling me I have to http://forum1.automationdirect.com/board/smile.gif
