Hello, I am trying to set up a new computer to communicate to my PLCs. I have had absolutely no luck with Automation Direct techs. This is a newer computer that has no established eithernet comms established. Can someone write me the instructions for setting up the connections please. I need help. Nate

You don't mention which PLC/software. Please provide that for more specific help. Do you understand the basics of Ethernet addressing and setup in your computer (Windows?)

I find Automation Direct one of the easiest PLC's to communicate to. Connect your computer to just one PLC, open the software and attempt to go online via Ethernet. You should see the PLC listed and pick connect (this is assuming your Ethernet connection of the new computer is set to "Obtain an IP address automatically. " To check this, you'll need to do the following:

In Windows 10, go the lower left icon and pick the gear (settings). In the center of the pop-up window pick "change adapter options " and right-click on Ethernet (you'll need your computer connected to ONE PLC) and pick "Properties. " Click on "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and pick the "Properties " button. Pick the radio dial button "Use the following IP Address " in the general tab. close the windows to allow your IP adapter to re-start. Then follow the instructions above.

As a side note, I 've found AD tech support one of the best (compared to the people who won't talk to you without a credit card or support contract).

It sounds like your PLCs are already on an existing network, or do they also need to be configured (i.e. absolute no Ethernet configured has been done on anything)? That answer will dictate how you proceed.

If you need understanding of IP Addresses, etc., ADC has a nice video to help explain some of it:

I typically directly plug new PLC's (Any vendor) directly into a spare ethernet port, so it's just the PLC and the computer on the network, and follow exactly what Todd Dice said above about how to set a static IP4 address. Typically you can pretty much set this to any "LAN " address but dose depend on PLC manufacturer
