when I use my DELL notebook, I can hook to the ECOM100 and it would simply connect. EX. 191.9.2.x 255.255.255.0.0. I do not set the default gateway. With my new notebook, IBM, I can only connect if I change the ECOM100 to 169.254.111.x 255.255.0.0. I do not set the default gateway. In both cases the notebooks are set to obtain address auto. I was told the ECOM does not broadcast addresses. I am confused why one notebook will connect and the other will not. How does anyone else handle being able to connect to ECOM's.

In our OEM shop we always use the 192.168.0.X network. We don't use this to connect to the company network. I set the 'tCP/IP ' properties to 'Use the following address ' and set an address within the 192.168.0.X range but different than the ECOM or other IP device.
When I wish to connect back to the company network I set it back to 'obtain an address automatically '.

If you are using Windows XP, there is a tab in the TCP/IP properties window called "Alternate Configuration ".
Put your static IP address in this using "User Configured ". When the NIC can't find a DHCP server, it will default to this address.
