I have a DL05 and a ECOMM100. I have set it up to use DHCP and send Email. I am trying to send Email through my Earhlink Email server. I am using the IP and port addresses they told me. All the iBoxes are successful except the one that actually sends the email. It seems to time out and the error code is decimal 11. Any ideas? Also, when using my Earthlink Email server I normally have to log in using a password. Can the DL05 use this server without providing a password? Thanks

The ECOM100, unfortunately, is not capable authenticating with an SMTP server. franji1 said in another thread that they may look into it for future versions of the module. I really hope they do. http://forum1.automationdirect.com/board/smile.gif I was using an ECOM100 to send emails, but had to abandon the idea. I run a web server at work, but will not run an open relay server. That's only asking for trouble.

You are not out of luck, though. You could run an open relay SMTP server on a machine not accessible FROM the internet. That's one idea, anyways.

    Good luck!

I have found that I can send email over the internet using the DL05. SMTP authorization isn't really required. The only comment I have is the work space allowed for email messages is kind of small, but it does work!

You 're using a mail server that doesn't require authentication. Such poorly configured mail servers cater to spammers, and are located by spammers rather quickly. You wouldn't believe the number of times each day my servers are scanned for exploits. A daily log file usually contains pages upon pages upons pages of that crap.

Yeah, I know. That is why I was so surprized when I found out my email server didn't require SMTP authentication. I found that fact posted right on the internet when I was looking up how to do the authentication.

I wonder if there is a reason they do not require it.

It surprises me all the time when I hear about ISP's running open-relay mail servers. It really is in their best interest not to do so when it's their bandwidth that suffers. The same ISP's usually get blacklisted by other providers, resulting in the blacklister's users not being able to receive email from blacklisted domains.

I believe AOL ran (or continues to run) open-relay mail servers. I have a friend who tried to log into his account one evening, but his account had been disabled. He called them, and they accused him of SPAMMING. They enabled his account and he checked his email. He had a TON of porn SPAM in his sent folder. Good 'ole AOL. I like to call them "A**holes Online ". http://forum1.automationdirect.com/board/smile.gif

Actually its still pretty common for an ISP to run an open relay mail server that only relays mail for clients within a certain IP space. This generally isn't considered a true open relay since its controlled by means of who has access to the ISPs network. If a SPAMer utilizes this type of setup then the ISP can easily look in the logs, find what IP did the abuse, and terminate service to that particular customer.

So how do they keep track of IP addresses if the devices that send the email gets its IP address using DHCP? Could they be using the email senders name for authentication? Or the MACC address?

I know I sound like a potential spammer, but I just want to use the DL05 to send email about equipment status. I dislike spammers as much as everybody else.

I have the DL05 sending email however I have to get back to the project and figure out how to send 8 different messages - each about 20 characters long. I am not sure if his can be done since the work space is only 65 words, but I will recheck that infomation.

If you are connected to their network then you have one of their IPs. The DL05 you 're using may be behind a firewall/gateway and therefore have a non-routable IP (192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x), but at the point your network connects to theirs you are using an IP assigned by them (whether DHCP or static).

Even if they assign you an IP via DHCP their DHCP server still keeps a log of where the IP went at what time based on the terminus equipment at your location (be it DSL modem, cable modem, fiber interface, T1 CSU/DSU, etc) so they can always look up (down to the customer level) who did what if they need/want to. That said if someone in your office started SPAMing people your ISP wouldn't know who in the office (though they may be able to guess from your computer's host name), but they would know it came from your office.
