GS3 overvoltage

We have a GS3-4010 suffering from overvoltage spikes. The protection level is set at 760. We are getting DC buss Voltage as high as 860. We know what item is causing the problem but I would like to know what the max level should be. How is it determined?

    According to the manual (page 6-3), your solution would be increasing the decel time or installing a braking resistor. I 've never adjusted the protection level, and am not sure what you risk playing with that setting.

    A motor starter some distance away is chattering and causing the overvoltage on the VFD. We will fix that but in the research process I see the max level OV is 900 volts. What determines that level of a setting?

    At which end of the drive is the motor starter? On the line side, or the load? A chattering motor starter tells me you have an issue with the circuit going to the starter's coil. It just seems the cause is your starter, and the effect is a drive overvoltage fault. Personally, I'd work on your chattering starter, and leave the drive setting alone.

    I agree, and once I am given the go ahead, we will. Obviously my customer would rather pay for an hour service call vs 8 man hours and parts.

    I was curious as to why 760 vs 900 if the components are built to withstand the higher. I have no plans on changing the setting at this time, esp when I don't know the risk playing with that setting either.

    760 works for most applications. It's adjustable for those times where you need a little more, without having to go to a larger drive.
