P3K & GS2 Drives Comms

Does anyone know if the communications are any faster by using the GS2 drive over RS485 to a P3K rather than using the Ethernet Module? We were hoping to Operate several of these (12) using Ethernet and not taking up a large amount of IO, but with the Feedback and Lag issues I am afraid we could have issues with the interlocking and getting these to shutdown quickly enough. Anybody have any experience with these or insight on how to speed up communications?

    P3K & GS2 Drives Comms

I have run up to 9 GS2 drives with start/stop/reference/data reads on one RS485 connection and had some lag problems. Even getting creative with which read/write commands were enabled due to machine conditions only went so far. Having to wait for each drive to perform the handshake and complete before going to the next just takes to long.

Went to the P3 using the remote IO tcpip connection and GS-EDRV100 modules for each drive. Was able to run 28 GS2 and GS3 drives with good response times.

Did have to again set some of the non-critical screen motor/controller data reads to be skipped if buffer was over 70%. This is the data usually displayed for the operator, such as, motor rpm, drive temp, dc buss voltage, etc.

The really nice part of it was that all the drive parameters are edited/stored in the P3 PLC and are uploaded at every power up.

A spare drive can be kept on the shelf with the communication parameters set and when powered up after install, gets a good set of parameters.

How are you doing your polling/comms? I have an application with TCP and 26 drives, I have lots of comm issues and lagging. Would appreciate some advice.

I 've done networking of motor drives, and EtherNet is faster than Modbus RTU. But, on applications where start/stop is time critical, you 're going to have to use two-wire control to the terminal block on the drive.
