Hi All, A few questions.. I'm going to be using (8) GS1 1HP drives with a DL06 on Modbus. 1. What's the best way to E-stop these drives? Is it acceptable to use the External fault input set up as a NC and break that? Do I need to cut the drives output off from the motor mechanically? 2. If I do generate an external fault can the fault be reset over modbus? (It looks like it can). 3. Can I tie all the drive commons together and activate the external fault? Any input is appreciated http://forum1.automationdirect.com/board/smile.gif

I am about the furthest thing from an expert on this subject, bu my understanding is this: If you desire an E-Stop as defined by OSHA, you must COMPLETELY take power away from the device you are wanting to stop.

This brings up a point that I have a problem with, when you remove all power from an AC drive you lose control of the drive, meaning your load will coast to a stop unless you are using a mechanical brake, whereas if you use your E-stop circuit to stop the drive as though you were stopping the drive normally, you still maintain the ability to use the DC injection braking to stop the drive as quickly as possible. Which I feel is a safer way. The reason that I am posting this is not to be argumentative, I am hoping to get more input on this subject.

Hmm both good responses - there seems to be quite a bit of debate on this topic. The drives are for a retrofit to replace soft-starts. There was no E-stop system at all (eek).
Does anyone know if I can tie the drive commons together to activate the 'external fault ' input? If I had to I could use individual safety contacts but if would be a bit more work.

In our applications where an active stop is the safest we use a Safety Relay with additional Timed outputs. Dropping the immediate output causes the drive(s) to stop at their highest controllable rate. Then, after a brief time, the safety timed contacts open all power to the drives.
