Here's my situation and my question: currently where I work we are upgrading all of our 480vac outlets to the meltric brand disconnect rated plugs, getting away from the old Hubbel 60 cam lock plugs. Each outlet has it's own fused disconnect located near the outlet, with the outlet normally in a seperate box mounted directly below the disconnect. Our maintenance manager wants to remove the second box and mount the outlet directly to the bottom of the disconnect box. Is this allowed by Code? Here is a link to a similar disconnect that we use: http://www.eaton.com/Eaton/ProductsServices/Electrical/ProductsandServices/ElectricalDistribution/SwitchesandDisconnects/SafetySwitches/GeneralDuty/Fusible-CartridgeFuse/index.htm A link to the plugs we are using http://www.meltric.com/html/decontactor-plugs-receptacles.html It just seems not right to do it in this manner to me.

I thought I'd mention; codes vary from area to area and you don't say where you are (or what industry you are in). While you do write in English, and are posting an a forum based in the US that sill doesn't narrow it down enough.

I don't understand why someone would want to remove an existing box, avoiding installing one of those relativity expensive cast boxes in the fist palace I can understand, but if it is already there why take it off? or does the new outlet require replacing the existing box with a different $$ one?.

In any case I personally would NOT mound one of these types receptacles on a sheet metal enclosure not originally designed for mounting one.

General industry, in Ohio. We 're a plant that makes wire mesh for concrete.

That's the funny part about this, he had a bunch of steel reinforcing plates laser cut to go inside the boxes as backing plates, why not just laser cut an adaptor for the outlet to the cast box, takes a 15 min swapout to about an hour of drilling and aligning these things. We even bought an adaptor that meltric sells to go from the 4inch box to the rectangular outlet. I would take that to the local machine shop and have them make me 45 more...

And we have had issues where a 480vac cord has got caught up and pulled out of the wall several times. The old cam lock plugs would at least fail at the plug and come apart, these things lock down hard. Id hate to see the mess afterwards...

I think the boss is going against the listing and labeling of the disconnects intended purpose. But the bottom line is, it's up to the authority having jurisdiction. I don't know if you get any "surprise " visits or not, but you may want to run the concept by the officials.
