I need to find a proximity sensor (or any sensor) suitable for reading the RPM of a shaft. I am having a problem finding a sensor that will accomplish this. I was hoping for something that may read a piece of reflactive tape on a shaft or a maybe a magnet, but I am open to suggestions. What is the best way / sensor to accomplish this  THANKS

    Grumpy365,

Can you give us some more details.

    1. Maximum shaft rpm.

    1800 RPM

    2. What will interface with the speed sensor PLC, rate meter, ect?

    rate meter,

    3. Does the shaft have a keyway where you intend to measure the speed?

I am having a problem visualizing how the sensor differentiates the key way, from the shaft. BUT, see the answer below

    4. Or is there a sprocket with inductive properties where you intend to measure?

I haven't torn down in to it yet. I was trying to get an idea of my options, so I could decide what I am looking for.

    5. Do you have plans for mounting the reflective tape? I have had bad experiences using the self adhesive without a backup mounting scheme.

Reflective tape wrapped in clear tape, but like I said, I am trying to understand my options

    See above in Red

If the motor shaft is thick enough, drill & tap a small hole in the shaft & install an 8-32 hex head bolt... works great as a flag for a short range prox.

If the prox sensing distance is say 2mm and the key slot is say 6mm deep. You place the prox close to the shaft to sense the metal and the key slot will not be sensed. Each time the key slot passes the prox that would be one rev then you calculate how many of them you get every 60 seconds.

Look at, Phares Electronics Industrial Speed Monitoring Systems

www.phareselectronics.com I have used their products before and the owner Allen Phares is very good to work with.
