Can anyone recommend a sensor that is good for detecting color that has a discrete output for interface to a PLC? For instance, I want to detect red vs. brown and respond based on feedback from the sensor. Thanks.

Both Keyence and Banner have excellent sensors for this.

I 've done exactly what your looking for. I use the Banner R58 Expert. It has the teach setup to accomplish exactly what your looking for. I can set it up to detect orange on red, tan on yellow. The Banner web site has all the specs. The sell for about $ 240.00.
