Remote HMI Protocol info?

Hey there, I was wondering if anyone has any information regarding the protocol the remote HMI apps on iphone and android are using? I want to make a custom application that does something similar, but before I start digging I figured I would ask. The app is simply sending the screen output to the app, and the touch info to the panel, so I would assume it's using VNC or something similar. Can anyone fill me in? Thanks
