When using the Multi-State Indicator object, what determines which message is displayed? What is the tag number in the "GENERAL ' screen actually used for?

You have answered your question.
The 'tag Name ' selected in the General tab , in combination with the three sections on the right side of that tab will determine HOW the TAG is interpreted and displayed.
If Message Number is selected, then in the Message tab, the displayed message is whichever message is EQUAL to the value of the tag on the General tab...
if TAG = 3, then MESSAGE 3 will be shown...
if no message 3 then look at 'Non-Programmed Message Action! '
NOTE: When selecting Bit Number, only 1 bit at a time is supported!
If you have more than 1 bit ON, I cannot tell you which message (if any) will be shown!
