Remote HMI

I have a d2-250-1 system with a c-more touchscreen located 100 feet on an ethernet connection (works great). Now customer would like a secondary HMI located about 1,500 feet away. Would a radio modem be the way to do this? If so can it connect to my ethernet switch or should i consider a serial connection using the secondary comm port on d2-250-1? Or is there some other way all together? Currently 9-slot base is full.

    A radio modem might work but it will be slow. Possibly very slow depending on the modem.

    If wiring is an option, RS-422 off of port 2 would work. Sticking with ethernet, something else to consider might be a copper to fiber convertor.

    I would use an Ethernet Wireless link. We are using the 5.8 Ghz 54 MBit radios and having very good luck with them.

    If you want to avoid fiber and you would like to extend your ethernet network you can go 1500 ' by using additional network switches. Ethernet is limited to 333 ' between nodes and a switch is a node so you could do this:

    300 ' 300 ' 300 ' 300 ' 300 '

    PLC---SW-----SW-----SW-----SW-----SW-----HMI

    Wireless is a GREAT idea, but do yourself a favor and stay FAR AWAY from D-Link's 2100's. We made the mistake of purchasing about a dozen of them for our wireless network at work. They suck, absolutely suck.

    The configuration software might work 5% of the time. The web interface doesn't even work right (settings don't usually apply and sometimes the same page isn't always the same).

    Go with Linksys WAP54G's and save yourself the headache of dealing with D-Link (D-Stink). D-Link does have some good products, but the 2100's, and the 2200's, are some the most poorly manufactured items out there.

    it is not recommneded to have more then 3 switches in line. it can cause drop outs. however i have not had any problems doing it. it is something that was made aware to me this spring. wireless would require a lot less work to install, but don't go too cheap or you spend the money you saved on asprin.

    Hmmm.

    I 've had the oppositie experience.

    I wouldn't take a linksys for free.

    Every D-Link Product I 've used has worked quite well, including the 2100-AP.

    Just my $0.02, but I 've dealt with LinkSYS, D-Link, Netgear, Cisco, Nortel, etc, etc, etc.. You pretty much get what you pay for on the networking and wireless networking front. The 5 port switch AD sells is $400+ and worth every penny in an industrial setting, but I wouldn't use it at the office because the office network just isn't that critical. By the same token I'm not willing to spend the money on cisco and nortel and netopia for my home network, but I really loath using linksys, d-link, netgear, etc in the office network...

    I 've had almost zero problems using LinkSys equipment, and tons with D-Link.

    On the other hand, I would love to use equipment from Cisco and Nortel, but our budgets really, really, suck. I could go into why, but you never know who is reading. http://forum1.automationdirect.com/board/smile.gif
