Durapulse GS4 and High leg
Has anyone here ever installed a 3 phase 240V high leg feeding a VFD? I was reading that you may have to remove the RFI jumper on the drive. This is on a Durapulse GS4. Any insight or thoughts would be appreciated!
I have done it many times. And yes, you remove the RFI filter or you get magic smoke when you first power the drive on. This is just the filter burning up and then the drive continues to run like normal. Did that my first time 😅
So here is my question. I did that today. No smoke. It just kept having overload faults and gave 0v on the output from V-W
The jumper should be removed, that is the proper way to do the wiring as per the manual. I only left it in by accident as it was my first time using a high end drive and these were never an issue on GS1 and GS2 drives before. Learned my lesson to always read the manual when dealing with a new series of hardware as things do change.
Yes, we have installed (2) GS4-2015 VFDs for (2) 15HP, 230V, 3-phase water pump motors on a 240V high-leg, mid-point-grounded delta system. Yes, we removed the RFI jumper per the manual. It has been working perfectly for many years now.
Will the motor run with No VFD? Across the Line?
Yes this was swapping it from across the line to VFD
So the question: is the motor actually over-loading, as seen by the VFD? Or is the VFD faulty, and giving a VFD fault when no fault is actually happening? Or is a VFD parameter setting causing the fault? Does the over-load occur during ramp-up? Or does the over-load happen over time? How much time? First, I would check the supply voltage on all (3) legs while starting and running the motor. (voltage can look good at no load, but not be good under load). Monitor the amps with a wrap-around meter and confirm the amps match VFD display. Double check the VFD motor nameplate and over-load settings. Make sure the accel time is not too fast to cause an over-load during startup. Also you say, "gave 0v on the output from V-W". Did you measure supply voltage during this time? If all else is ok, I would swap-out the VFD. If machine must run, can you, temporarily, run again with the across-the-line starter?
