Confusion over EA-MG-PGM-CBL R2.0 compatibility with Windows 11

My employer purchased a new Windows 11 computer for the guy who does the downloading to Clicks and C-more micros for our standard product. Unfortunately, he got the error message in the device manager regarding the EA-MG-PGM-CBL (photo below module and rev). I read THIS POST and it appears our device is January 2019 R2.0 and it should NOT WORK in Windows 11. Out of desperation as our product is in high demand, I downloaded the ALL-IN-ONE driver, ran it, restarted the computer and got it to work. I'd purchase a new cable but web store lists 7/29 as soonest one can ship. Now, normally I can trust the estimate, but I've had a BRX on order since February, was estimated to ship June, and is now pushed to September.

My question is, Is this just my dumb luck, or did I find an anomaly to the rule?

Products like this use a chipset from another company and it just comes packaged in a nice enclosure and a brand slapped on it. So it doesn't matter at all what the company that sells it says about compatibility, it only matters if the chipset has a driver for a certain OS.

That product appears to use a Prolific PL2303 chipset, which does support Windows 11.https://www.prolific.com.tw/US/ShowProduct.aspx?p_id=225&pcid=41

How were you able to determine which chipset was used on my unit?

      • PouchesInc (Customer)

When you download the drivers for the product from AD the zip file has a bunch of files in it labeled PL2303, and opening the release notes file talks about Prolific PL2303 chipsets.

My question is, Is this just my dumb luck, or did I find an anomaly to the rule?

From the app note you referenced:

There is not a “hard, fast” rule to which driver will always work, it can depend on your installation.

So, I would answer your question as a 'yes-yes.'

Yes, it was dumb luck and yes you found an anomaly hiding within that 'not a hard, fast rule!'

AD could at least change the wording to this as it led to my confusion. I plead guilty to taking things literal.Screenshot 2022-06-24 065212

But then where would our dumb luck reside? :)

I had the same issue. I wanted to purchase a new version of the cable, but the Automation Direct webpage shows them on back order. My fix; Purchase a USB to RS232 + 485 + TTL converter that works with Windows 11. Instead of using Port 1 or Port 2 to connect to the Click PLC, connect the converter to the RS 485 screw terminals on the PLC.

TX3 (LG) of the click PLC connects to the (GND) terminal of the RS 485 converter.

TX3 (+) of the PLC connects to the (A+) of the RS485 converter.

TX3 (-) of the PLC connects to the (B-) of the RS 485 converter.

    Get one of these:

    https://www.plccable.com/usb-to-rs232-plc-programming-cable-special-plctalk-net/

I have found it to be the best USB to RS-232 converter. It has a nice long cable and LED indicators on the hub. Use it with regular serial cables for all the various RS-232 devices. Get some mini adapters and gender changers too.

It is a good idea to carry more than one brand. I have three different brands just in case I run into an oddball device that doesn't work with one of them. (Talking to you, DataLinc).

I know this is an old thread but I thought this might be useful to others. I have some standard clicks that were older but all my computers are now on windows 11. I had this old 2.0 cable. I uninstalled the prolific driver and ran the driver installer in Windows 8 compatibility mode. R Ver 2.0 works perfect on my Windows 11. I really didn't want to spend another $50 for a cable I already bought once.
