Because Codesys it the most open and powerful PLC programming environment there is. It is ideal high volume, low cost products, that have a lot of user configurability, and just need a web based UI.

The problem is that there is no low cost PLC hardware that supports it. The hardware itself is not the issue it doesn't require much to run on. It can run on a RPI Zero, RPi 1 thru RPi 4. A module that connect the RPi to the Productivity IO bus and Codesys Drivers to connect to the IO modules from codesys would be all that is needed. Anything else would just be icing.

I will fully agree with this.

The mention of the CX7000 is not a legit comparison because Beckhoff will not allow the full features on a Performance level 10 controller. For instance, if you want Ethernet/IP, not with the CX7000. But take a controller that runs the Codesys run-time, then you are not restricted on the features.

I once investigated a possibility of the Kunbus RevPi Connect with the Beckhoff E-Cat buss on the right side to allow any Beckhoff IO to attach to it. This would make the near ideal PLC in the way of cost, features, and flexibility.

An important detail to note on any CodeSys controller is the capability of non-volatile memory. Whether its battery backed RAM or a built-in UPS, it seems many controllers lack this and its easy to miss.

When Beckhoff launches the CX7000 series, that controller will most likely fill the segment of the market you're talking about.

    • TheColonel26 (Customer)

Isn't the CX7000 Vaporware? Is that the control that they have talked about for like 4 years and have yet to release?

      • RBPLC (Customer)

Possibly. I don't know how long they've been advertising it for. I'd say Beckhoff is closer to releasing that controller than FACTS is to releasing a P1000 Codesys variant. Something like the Kunbus ReVPi is also in the same price range.

    • TheColonel26 (Customer)

Also Beckhoff Limits software features according to there "Performance" rank which is just a ufmism for how much you paid for it. the CX7000 is slated to have basically no useful features, like Ethernet/IP or C# / C++ code integration.

You can do all of that with Vanilla Codesys, but it is very much batteries not included. I wonder if you can do it in TwinCats 3 the same way, or if Beckhoff prevents you.

We've talked about doing it on a BRX derivative. Hardware requirements aren't bad, but would require a new processor since is limited to certain CPUs. It isn't a super high priority, but we see the potential benefit.

    • TheColonel26 (Customer)

Why on a BRX? P1K is much preferable due to smaller and size and more IO options.
