Hello Guys, I was wondering it if was possible to control multiple STP-DRV-4850 drives (3 total) with SCL commands with a DL06 PLC, is this possible by using the built in port? or is a TRIPLE PORT BASIC ASCII COPROCESSOR needed? Best regards Fernando

Well, the catalog page says the STP-DRV-4850 has RS-232 comunications, which means each drive will need it's own RS-232 port. So, no, the built in port by itself can not control three drives. The triple port BASIC module is cheaper than four (one for the PLC) RS232 to RS485 converters. Since the drives use ASCII I'm not sure one could even use a multidrop RS485, so TRIPLE PORT BASIC ASCII COPROCESSOR seems to be the way to go.

    Thanks Tinker,

Thought so, then if no more expansion modules are needed, y could just get by with a DL05, although the manual for the co processor recommends using the DL06 because of a more elaborate ascii command list.

Followup question... I just need to know if it can be done with the DL06/co processor/surestep advanced stepper drives.

Im building a pick and place machine, this machine will go an pick some items from a rack, lets say the racks contain 100 items. On a PC I have a database of the coordinates of these items on 2 axis defined in stepper steps referenced from a home position.

The user will input trough the computer which item he wants, the PC will look up the coordinates from such item, send the step values to a register on the PLC, and then the PLC send the ascii commands trough the co processor to the surestep drives.

Am I along the right path?

Or should I be looking for another solution.

    Thanks!

    Fernando
