I am using Directsoft32 on a new laptop that does not have serial or parallel ports any more, only USB. I purchase an USB to serial converter and it works with EZText but cannot get it to work with DirectSoft32. The program locks up. What can be done to fix? Thanks Peter

What version of DirectSoft are you using? If it is Rel 3 or Rel 4, get the latest and greatest maintenance release of either (Build 80, Build 25, respectively).

If you have Rel 2, chances are it won't work. The USB to Serial devices do not fully "emulate " themselves as serial ports sometimes (in terms of what kind of device they are).

Finally, make sure that whatever serial port your converter maps to (e.g. COM3 or COM4, or ...), that you have that port ENABLED in the DS400.INI file (DS300.INI if rel 3). If you can't create a link to that port, do Start->Run... "DS400.INI " (no quotes, then enter). This should open up Notepad with your DS400.INI file. Scroll down to the group, and set the COM3Enable=0 and set it equal to 1, e.g. COM3Enable=1
