Planning for future communications (email & texting)

Hi all, Starting to plan my next project which will be a bigger jump in terms of I/O and communications. It will likely need at least a DL06 (I 've done two DL05 projects) and a touchscreen HMI (I 've used C-more). I noticed that you can add Ethernet capability to either the PLC or HMI and I imagine both as well. Is there an advantage to having it in one or the other or both? I will primarily be using it at first to report when something like a die has taken a certain number of hits so we can sharpen it. Further on down the road would like to non-invasively track some things like up time and product produced. I would imagine this is fairly simple stuff but just want to have the hardware properly spec'd to not have to have a "do over ". Any recommendations? Thanks, BB

    LOL, if you had to "do over " you'd be DO -MORE work than you had to. I haven't actualy used a Do-More, so I'll let someone else give you the sales pitch, but it might well be something to consider.

    If your planning for possible future use, getting the CMORE with ethernet is about the cheapest way to get a small system connected to the ethernet.

    The CMORE can monitor fault bits programmed in the PLC and cause thing to happen with the "Event Manager ", things like sending an email. You can also log data to a CF card, and send logged data to the network.

    Look at cloud based sites like xively.com You can send your data to these sites, make graphs email, tweet or whatever on trigger values. Keep your system simple and let the internet do all the work.

    Hook it directly into a 3rd-party, internet based cloud service... Great idea for something that appears to be controlling a motorized process?

    A little off-topic, but this is probably not a good idea for someone relatively new to the controllers.

    I am talking output only. A simple HTTP PUT statement can get your data to a site accessible by all your users and from there emails and texts can fly. If you need to change a recipient's email address from Fiji, just log into the site handling those emails and change it. Don't need to be near the PLC. Not for everyone, I agree but definitely the future.
