Have a PLC send a SMS message?

I have a project where the customer would like me to send a text message to a cell phone upon an alarm. Has anyone here accomplished this? I have been looking at the 3G products offered by B &B electronics, but I haven't grasped exactly how I would get a PLC to tell one to send a text.

If your PLC can send an e-mail then it can send a text message. For example a Verizon customer could be texted by sending an e-mail to 1234567890@vtext.com if their number is (123)456-7890. I am not very familiar with the Direct Logics PLC's ability to e-mail, but the PAC 3000 can (though I could not get the SMTP server to work) and a C-More panel definitely can (I 've tried it succesfully). Hope this helps.

There is a new product coming out. It connects your plc to a website and logs the data so you can view your data by logging into the site. It will also send a text message or email when a value is above or below limits you set. The plc is connected to an ethernet serial server. There is no setup required at the hardware end as long as there is a DHCP server in the plant and internet access. The administrative side of the website lets you setup the Vmemory to log and who to email when a value reaches a certain point.

Look at www.ljbeng.com for more details. I don't know the release date yet...

It needs to be 100% wireless. No local Ethernet is available.

JoeW, this company pffers a range of products and service. I have used this company's products with good success. If not exactly what you are looking for now, perhaps it may help you in the future. Two product links below.

    JoeW,

Also, look at Multitech cellular modems. The customer would have to activate it like a regular cell phone (maybe at a reduced rate since it just needs an unlimited sms plan). Your plc could send the appropriate serial data to this device and make and push out an sms message. I have used them and it will send an sms to another phone but it does not send to other email servers like @yahoo.com etc...

Looks like the Multitech is exactly what I need, and at half the cost of the other devices I was considering. Thanks testone.

No problem. I used to have terrible cell signal in my office and had to put the cell modem in a window 300 ' from my office and use ethernet serial devices to get the serial data to my pc. I now have a cell tower 1/4 mile from my office, full bars ahead!

It works by sending AT*xx commands and if you are just sending sms, it should be fairly straight forward how to proceed.

The Multitech cell modem will send an email message to any email address. My co-worker found an example of how to do it so I was wrong above... I have used them and it will send an sms to another phone but it does not send to other email servers like @yahoo.com etc...

JoeW, ebalarde is correct. The ECOM100s can send e-mail from the AD PLCs (DL05, DL06, DL205, DL405). However, you would have to have an e-mail server on the ECOM100 network.
