I just recently commissioned my first GS4. The GS4 has problems. I spent a considerable amount of time on the phone with tech support to no avail. I am posting this to hopefully encourage AD to either fix the problem or at least have a clue to the problem. I was able to read the drive, via MODBUS, but received an exception response of 3 when trying to write to the drive. Status monitor 2 had bits 8 and 10 on indicating that the source of speed and control were by communication. (It turns out that these bits did not change even if P3.00 and P4.00 are not set to communication.) There were no error messages on the GS4 but the red (and green) com light was flashing. It eventually started working after I power cycled the drive. It turns out that any change to the parameters will require the drive to be power cycled before it will work again. After the initial power cycle the drive appears to be OK until a write to the drive is attempted. It will then show 56 in SM1 and display CE3 on the display.

This is how I think about the need for a power cycle - many times these communication and command parameters require multiple settings changes. It would be incorrect when only some of the needed parameters had been changed to begin running from a possibly incompatible combination. Thus the need for the reset/power cycle. It's kind of like a 'I 've set them all. Start using them ' confirmation. This is in at least some of the Allen Bradley drives also.
